Google Logo
I’ve wanted to do a Google logo for years but was always afraid it wouldn’t turn out well. It has so many curves and thin lines, that it doesn’t really lend itself well to LEGO. But I just could not resist any longer. And, to my surprise, I couldn’t find anyone else who had done it to this scale before. Especially with Google’s early history relating to LEGO.

I figured that if I made it large enough, it might just work. I played with the logo quite a bit and fed it through Lugnet’s Mosaic Maker which gave me little more than a starting point to work from. There was still quite a bit of editing to do.

After a couple of hours of work, I had a layout that I was happy with.

This project was the first to be built in my new house and my new office/lab/studio, and gave me a reason to work hard to get my room cleaned up and organized.
Once that was done, I printed out the design and started building.

Thankfully, I had Amanda’s help. It would have easily taken twice as long to build this monster without her.

That’s where I told her to hold the o’s. I can’t show you where she was originally holding them.
So then, there was more building…

And quite a bit more…

And about 10 or so hours later, we were done.

I thought I was going to have to take apart another LEGO piece just to get enough white 1xN bricks to finish, but luckily, I had enough. Although, I am now quite low on white and will gladly accept donations to re-stock. :)
Even though the letters are raised and cast their own shadow when the light is right, I felt it really needed the gray LEGO shadow to look like the “real” thing. Besides, from the above photo’s angle, it looks like the letters are floating a half of an inch off the surface. Neat.

The final size is 4′5″ by 1′8″ and I’m not sure where it will end up hung in my house. We were thinking of putting it up in the hallway where there is plenty of space, but then you can’t stand back and see it from a distance. Ah well, we’ll see. That’s not the real reason for building these things anyway. :) I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
