The Nullkid Arrives!
Sunday, July 22nd, 2007We have our little Sophie. After 20 hours of inducing, a c-section was performed and Sophie is out, alive and kicking. The last time I went out to see her, she had started opening her eyes and I could have sworn that she was looking right at my big head. Anyway, we’re all exhausted and Amanda is now recovering nicely. Here are a few pictures to get you by for now.
Sophia Anne Winesett: 6 lbs. 15 oz. @ 19.5 inches. Born July 22, 2007.
Sophie Surprises!
Friday, July 20th, 2007So, Amanda went in for the usual baby-doctor visit today, but it turned out to be not-so-typical. The doc sent her to labor and delivery and we’re now waiting for the induction to begin! I’m going to be a dad in < 24 hours! W00t! It’s nice that they have free wireless access here. Too bad they block too much. I can’t even get to our site from here! How am I posting then? I’m VNC’ed into my home computer! Muahaha…
Update Saturday 3:35PM:
She’s been on the meds to get the labor going for about 5 hours. Not much has changed yet, but she isn’t feeling well. Please say a prayer for her.
Update Saturday 11:49PM:
Sophie has shown her stubborn ways yet again. She’s decided not to come today. The potosin didn’t quite get us where we needed to be and so we’re going to take a “break” and try again tomorrow. At least we won’t be sharing her birthday with the release of the final (thank God) Harry Potter book and Bush’s colonoscopy.
Update Sunday 10:46AM:
The induction continues along with contractions. They broke the water and we are again waiting…
Update Sunday 12:49PM:
Epidural is in. Potosin upped. Contractions coming regularly. 3cm. Moving along. Perhaps it will be today?
Update Sunday 5:09PM:
Still making progress. 6cm.
Update Sunday 8:36PM:
The induction progress has plateaued. The doc has decided to do a C-Section. Amanda was just given the first bit of meds by the anesthesiologist. We expect to have Sophie out in the next 1.5 hours. I will be going in soon with her.

Sunday, July 15th, 2007Got to Love the Net
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007Thanks to our three rambunctious cats, we need the floors of our house cleaned nearly every day. If we don’t, hair and cat litter are easily seen all over our wood laminate flooring. Thanks to the Roomba, we rarely have to do the work ourselves. (Yay robots!) But recently our buddy stopped working. Actually, it started dancing all the time. I make it a point to clean the Roomba out with compressed air and a letter opener (for the hair on the brush) at least twice a month, so I’m very familiar with most of the sensors the Roomba contains. I figured that this “dancing” was due to a dirty sensor and so I cleaned it even more vigorously than normal to try to dislodge any dirt that might be causing the malfunction, but it was to no avail. The iRobot support page suggests that it might “require a software upgrade” which I read to mean “we have identified a slight flaw in our design and have created a software band-aid to get around it.” I wanted no part of that. So I did some more digging and found this. Apparently, dust or dirt can make its way into the drive wheel ’s optical tachometer sensor making the Roomba brain unable to determine whether the wheel in question is moving. Roomba uses this to figure out how far it has gone when driving and detect a stalled wheel if it gets stuck. Anyway, I read this site to see where the sensor was located and after removing a few screws sprayed some air at the sensor and viola, no more dancing. Thank you very much, mister internet.
