Friday Night Hack
Saturday, January 26th, 2002Very long story semi-short, last night I got the idea of running my digital camera RCA adapter through the extra phone pairs already wired through my house. I tried using just one pair, but the signal was too weak to make it to the other side of my house and to the TV card in the computer. Then I decided to use the other two pairs that weren’t in use and voila! Three pairs get the signal through, but it is still to weak to be in color. Oh well. It’s still kinda neat. Yes, I disconnected the three pairs coming from the outside at the distribution box, so that the signals wouldn’t interfere. I used an old ethernet cable that was already cut in half, and just used the 3 pairs of wires that surround the two inner ones that my phone line uses. This gives me two interesting cables with RJ-45 jacks on one end, and RCA connectors on the other. What does all this mean? You can now watch me in the LEGO room when I turn that camera on. I’m not sure I’m going to do this often, but for now, it’s something different.
